Unison

About Unison

UNISON is one of the UK's largest trade unions, serving more than 1.3 million members.

We represent full-time and part-time staff who provide public services, although they may be employed in both the public and private sectors. Our members work in local government, health care, colleges and schools, the police service and the voluntary sector as well as in transport, the electricity, gas and water industries.

  • We help and advise individual members who are facing difficulties at work.
  • We help our members to group together to campaign for improved working conditions.
  • We represent our members in negotiation with employers.
  • We make sure our members get equal treatment and fair pay.
  • We offer a wide range of benefits to our members, from free legal and welfare advice to offering big savings on services such as home insurance.

UNISON Personal Assistants Support Network

Are you a Personal Assistant?

Personal Assistants provide care and support to enable people to lead quality and independent lives.

Personal Assistants (PAs) provide support and care for people who have social care needs. But who supports the PA's?

UNISON is the union for Personal Assistants, and this web site is here to make sure PA's have a place to come to find out about their rights and share experiences.

Unison wants to do more for Personal Assistants. We have set up an ONLINE network so that Personal Assistants can share experience, mentor and support each other.

The idea is to grow a "community" of Personal Assistants that will work with Unison to deliver access to training and development, promote excellent care practise, help lift the employment status of the profession and ultimately secure better outcomes for Individuals.

Unison is the Union for all social care staff. We are concerned about the pay and working conditions of Personal Assistants. There are no national guidelines or mandatory training. If Local Authorities set the Direct Payments too low this penalises both the Personal Assistant and the Individual Employer.

It is difficult to suddenly become an employer and we want to support Individual Employers as well as the Personal Assistants on educating around employment issues.
