The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association

Our Services

Guide dog service

  • Our iconic guide dogs are at the heart of our charity. Guide dogs are a unique way for people with sight loss to move around safely and confidently, to get out of their homes, take part in social activities and feel part of life.
  • Guide Dogs is the largest breeder and trainer of working dogs in the world. Each year, we breed around 1,450 puppies.
  • In 2017 we supported 5,075 guide dogs and assistance dogs.

My Guide – sighted guiding

  • We train volunteers to become sighted guides, then match them in their local area to people with sight loss, so they can help individuals take part in their community.
  • In 2017, 3,050 people were supported with a My Guide.

Children and young people’s services

  • Around 35,000 children and young people are severely sight impaired and need support. We have six services that help including family support, education support, and recreational activities.

Volunteering

Guide Dogs has over 16,000 volunteers giving around 19.5 million hours of their time. From becoming My Guides, looking after our dogs, providing transport services, raising funds and so much more, their commitment, skill and energy help us transform the lives of so many with sight loss.

Guide Dogs has more than 50 different volunteering opportunities. Whatever skills or interests a person has, we’re sure to have a role that suits. For example:

  • Puppy walking - looking after a puppy during its first year
  • Boarding – looking after dogs in training.
  • My Guide – providing sighted guide assistance.
  • Joining a local fundraising group.
  • Giving talks to schools and community groups.
  • Driving our people, dogs or equipment.
